Where does India stand in IFSC World Climbing Championship? What's there for other young aspirants and climbing training institutes?

You will see several articles trying to make a point that Indian Climber's performance at IFSC World Climbing Championship was disappointing but it is a good topic for Theory of Knowledge - TOK, a subject introduced by IB board in standard XII where students are supposed to read the writer along with the article.

India, a country where Cricket dominates the entire sports arena, there is hardly any encouragement and support for the aspiring climbers and under such circumstances

26 years old Kumar Gaurav from New Delhi settled at 12th Rank in Combined Men, 93rd in Lead Men, 85th in Boulder Men and 46th in Speed Men at IFSC Climbing World Championship held at Moscow in September 2021.

Whereas, 21 years old Hrithik Marne from Maharashtra settled at 82nd in Lead Men, 92 in Boulder Men and DNS (Did Not Start) in Speed Men at IFSC Climbing World Championship held at Moscow in September 2021.

What about Indian Women climbers?

Did not start/participate in recent IFSC Climbing World Championship held at Moscow in September 2021.

What does 'Did Not Participate' & 'Did Not Start' indicate? It is the stage where we must check the facilities, training system, support and encouragement provided to the aspirant climbers back at their home country. So, does it mean that India is not interested or not investing in sport climbing? Probably this is the only conclusion one could arrive at but we must do a ground check. Today, there is an International Standard Climbing available in the cities like Bhubaneshwar. There are climbing walls in Jamshedpur, Uttarkashi, Arunachal, Bangalore, Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and several other  tier I & tier II Cities. One thing that could be done immediately is engaging more and more teenagers to these climbing walls, ensuring the commitment of the facility management committee more than climbers.

India did not secure a rank in any format (Lead, Speed or Boulder) of IFSC Climbing Worldcup 2021 and this is where it needs to start.

  1. Yes the talent is there. However skills , technique and facilities are required. This is where institutions like Kapisa can help.
